Optional add-on

Backed, if the IRS ever asks.

Every Refined study is engineering-based, ATG-aligned, and CCSP-reviewed — built to stand on its own. Audit Support adds a dedicated line of defense if the IRS ever has questions, so you're never facing a notice alone.

The same defense, whichever level you choose.

If a notice arrives, Audit Support puts the people who built your study to work substantiating it.

A methodology memo

A clear, examiner-ready explanation of how each asset was classified, why every recovery period was assigned, and the engineering and cost basis behind your allocations.

Your substantiation package

The workpapers, cost references, and photo evidence that back the numbers in your study — organized and ready to hand to an examiner.

Direct consultation

We work alongside you and your CPA to prepare your response and substantiate the original figures — you're not interpreting an IRS letter on your own.

Two levels. Same team behind both.

The work product is identical — the difference is how long the coverage window stays open.

Basic
$495 one-time
3-year coverage

Covers an IRS examination of the tax year your study is first claimed, for any exam opened within three years of filing that return — the normal IRS assessment window, where the vast majority of examinations begin.

If a notice ever comes, here's the path.

STEP 01

You get a notice

An IRS notice or audit-related letter touches your depreciation or cost segregation study.

STEP 02

You loop us in

Contact us within seven business days — before responding to the IRS — so we can prepare.

STEP 03

We substantiate

We assemble your methodology memo and substantiation package and consult with you and your CPA on the response.

No additional fees beyond direct travel expenses — and only in the rare case an on-site visit is needed.

An important distinction

Audit Support covers explaining and substantiating your study — the documentation and reasoning behind the numbers. It is not formal IRS representation. If you'd like a credentialed professional to correspond with or appear before the IRS on your behalf, that's available as a separate engagement through our tax lead's firm, Magnolia Tax ServicesEugene Marshall, EA. Just reach out and we'll connect you.

What's covered — and what isn't.

Audit Support covers the cost segregation study and its original figures, within the window of the tier you choose.

Covered

  • Explaining and substantiating your study's classifications and recovery periods
  • The original figures and allocations in your report
  • The methodology memo, workpapers, and consultation to prepare your response

Not covered

  • Formal IRS representation (available separately through our EA)
  • Examinations arising from fraud, willful evasion, or an unfiled return
  • Items on your return unrelated to the study; taxes, penalties, or interest
  • Any guarantee of a particular audit outcome

Add Audit Support when you request your study.

Choose Basic or Extended right on the intake form — it's added to your fixed study fee at checkout, with no surprises.

Audit Support is an optional service of Refined Cost Segregation and does not constitute tax, legal, or accounting advice, or representation before the IRS. Basic coverage is limited to an examination of the tax year in which the study is first claimed, for examinations initiated within 3 years of that return's filing; Extended coverage applies to any tax year the study affects, for examinations initiated within 10 years of the first-claim return's filing. Both exclude examinations arising from fraud, willful evasion, or an unfiled return. Eligibility requires notifying Refined within 7 business days of any IRS correspondence and before communicating with the IRS. Formal IRS representation, if desired, is available separately through Magnolia Tax Services (magnoliataxservices.com), a credentialed tax practice. Service is subject to the terms of your engagement agreement.
